Details: As reported earlier, Estonia's armed forces issued an air-raid warning in several parts of the country overnight as multiple unidentified drones were heading towards Estonian airspace.

Colonel Uku Arold, head of strategic communications at the Estonian Defence Forces, said that Ukraine had been attacking Russian territories near the Baltic Sea with drones that night, and several likely went off course and entered Estonian airspace.

Arold said that Ukraine targets Russia's military infrastructure and facilities that support the war, while Russia attempts to repel these attacks, including by diverting drones off course using various means, adding that these were most likely drones that had gone off course.

According to Arold, debris from one drone was found in Kastre Parish in Tartu County.

He also confirmed that several drones entered Estonian airspace and were detected both by radar and fighter jets. None of them was shot down over the country.

Background:

  • On the evening of 30 March, Latvia's National Armed Forces detected an unidentified drone near the border with Russia.
  • It was also reported that during a series of Ukrainian strikes on Russian ports around St Petersburg last week, several drones strayed into the territory of Baltic states, with two crashing in Latvia and Estonia. Earlier, another drone crashed in Lithuania.
  • On 29 March, drones – at least one of them Ukrainian – violated airspace in south-eastern Finland. The Foreign Ministry said it had apologised to Finland over the incident.
