Northern air corridors reopen, Aleppo Airport resumes flights to Istanbul and Jeddah

The General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport in Syria announced today, Thursday, March 5, 2026, the reactivation of key air corridors and the resumption of flights at Aleppo International Airport, following comprehensive operational and technical assessments of Syrian airspace.

In a statement, the authority said it decided to reopen an air corridor extending from Aleppo toward the Mediterranean Sea, in addition to resuming operations in the northern sector of Syrian airspace toward the Republic of Turkey, alongside the restart of operational activity at Aleppo International Airport.

On Thursday, Syrian Airlines operated its first flight from Aleppo International Airport to Istanbul, which landed safely.

The authority also outlined the next steps, including the operation of a new flight on Friday from Aleppo to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, as well as studying the addition of other international destinations, with Riyadh at the top of the list.

Ongoing assessments, regional coordination

The authority said operational risk assessments for Syrian airspace are carried out continuously, around the clock, in line with internationally recognized methodologies.

It added that there is ongoing coordination with regional air traffic management centers to ensure timely decision making that balances safety and aviation security requirements on the one hand, and facilitates travel and supplies to serve citizens on the other.

Reviewing measures after a temporary closure

The announcement follows a series of precautionary measures the authority took in recent days amid regional developments.

On February 28, it announced a temporary closure of the southern air corridors in Syrian airspace for 12 hours, before later the same day announcing the closure of Syrian airspace to all aircraft traffic and suspending airport operations for 24 hours.

The authority then extended the closure to include March 1 and 2, based on ongoing operational and technical assessments and in light of security developments in the region, before partially reopening the northern corridors and Aleppo airport as of March 4.

The head of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, Omar Hosari, held expanded meetings with the Air Traffic Emergency Management to review regional developments and assess their technical implications for air transport in Syria. The discussions included reviewing precautionary procedures and approved operational measures in line with a risk based assessment methodology and a safety management system.
