Russian forces attacked Zaporizhzhia with guided aerial bombs on Sunday, June 28, resulting in strikes on a residential neighborhood and injuries to civilians.
On Sunday morning, Russian forces targeted the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia with guided aerial bombs (KABs). The munitions scored a direct hit on a residential neighborhood, causing structural damage and sparking a fire.
Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, confirmed the attack on Telegram. “The Russians struck the regional center on Sunday morning. There is known destruction and a fire,” Fedorov reported. He stated that at least two civilians – a man and a woman – were injured in the bombing.
Fedorov also shared video footage from the impact zone showing emergency rescue workers carrying wounded individuals from the rubble. Authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage and the number of casualties.
Later, the head of the Military Administration said that the number of victims is rising – one child is known to have been injured.
Overnight ballistic missiles in Kyiv
Between 2:00 a.m. and 2:35 a.m. local time, air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv as at least seven explosions echoed across the city.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, confirmed that the capital was targeted by ballistic weaponry. The primary impact zone was the Darnytskyi district on the city’s left bank.
Ukraine has issued a public ultimatum to Belarus, demanding the removal of relay equipment used to guide Russian drone strikes.
The attack sparked fires at several locations, including the courtyard of a residential building, an auto repair shop, and an unoccupied non-residential structure. Tkachenko confirmed that at least two people were injured in the Darnytskyi district. Emergency responders remain at the impact sites to clear debris and secure the areas.
Drone strikes on Chernihiv and Dnipropetrovsk
Simultaneously, the northern city of Chernihiv faced an attack by Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). According to the Chernihiv City Council, drone debris fell on a local secondary school, damaging an educational building. The blast wave shattered windows in an adjacent five-story residential apartment block, resulting in injuries to two people.
In the central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, DSNS reported that Russian strikes targeted gas stations in the Dniprovskyi and Samarivskyi districts. The attacks ignited fires and damaged multiple vehicles, leaving two people injured.
Furthermore, Russian forces bombarded the Nikopol district, targeting the city of Nikopol as well as the Chervonohryhorivka, Marhanets, and Pokrovske communities. The shelling ignited a fire at a local sports school building, though emergency rescue crews successfully extinguished all blazes across the region.
On Saturday, Zelensky stated that over the preceding seven days, Russian forces had deployed approximately 1,400 attack drones, 1,500 guided aerial bombs, and 19 missiles of various types against 15 Ukrainian regions.
“Using various types of weapons, the Russians are striking people, ordinary residential buildings, and our civilian infrastructure,” Zelensky stated, highlighting that cities like Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, and Sumy are facing near-daily bombardments. The president continues to urge international partners to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, particularly with advanced anti-ballistic systems, to protect civilian populations from the onslaught.
