Bridges are under water, cornfields are flooded and classes and work are cancelled in northeast China as Typhoon Bavi continues moving north, prompting several local governments to issue emergency alerts.

On Monday, Shenyang, capital of the northeastern province of Liaoning, said all classes at junior high, primary schools and kindergartens were suspended for the day, along with construction work and outdoor activities, while 94 tourist attraction sites remain closed.

Typhoon Bavi brings heavy rain, triggers floods in northern and eastern China

A government notice encouraged other employees to work from home and reduce travelling to ensure safety. More than 3,500 staff across 12 government departments are on duty for continued rescue and flood relief, it said.

As of Monday morning, roads in Shenyang were flooded, leading to the temporary closure of some bus routes and subway stations.

In Chengde, Hebei province – three hours from Beijing – flooding washed away several cars, media reported. Roads in about nine villages in the area were destroyed and villagers were trapped as heavy rain continued late into Sunday night, with their ordeal captured on video.

The city was still recovering from hail and rain in June. In some parts of Chengde, the situation last month was so severe that residents had to shovel their way out, according to media reports at the time.
