FM Sybiha meets South Korean foreign minister to discuss Russia–North Korea cooperation

The foreign ministers of Ukraine and the Republic of Korea, Andrii Sybiha and Cho Hyun, discussed in Seoul the common challenges posed by Moscow’s cooperation with Pyongyang and the issue of North Korean prisoners of war.

Sybiha announced this on the social media platform X, according to Ukrinform.

“I was pleased to meet with Cho Hyun, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, in Seoul. Our talks reaffirmed the strong and growing cooperation between Ukraine and the Republic of Korea,” he noted.

The parties discussed ways to develop political dialogue at the highest level, expand economic and business ties, involve Korean businesses in Ukraine’s reconstruction, and deepen cooperation in the field of security.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister briefed Minister Cho Hyun on the situation on the battlefield, Ukraine’s efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace, and the latest achievements of the Ukrainian defense industry.

Sybiha also thanked the Republic of Korea for its unwavering support of Ukraine and emphasized that Russian aggression has global consequences. In particular, this is due to Moscow’s direct involvement of North Korea in the war against Ukraine, as well as the transfer of resources and technologies to Pyongyang in response to its support.

“We spoke about shared challenges stemming from the deepening cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang. We also discussed in detail the issue of North Korean POWs and we know how to proceed with respect to international humanitarian law,” the minister emphasized.

The diplomats agreed that the development of Ukrainian-Korean cooperation will contribute to strengthening security, stability, and international law both in Europe and in the Indo-Pacific region.

As reported by Ukrinform, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha is conducting working visits to the Republic of Korea and Japan from June 29 to July 2.

On June 23, South Korean authorities expressed their readiness to accept all North Korean soldiers who fought on Russia’s side against Ukraine and were taken prisoner.

In January of last year, Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region captured two soldiers from North Korea.
