Saab Australia has reached a major milestone in the delivery of the Australian Interface for the Hobart class destroyer combat system.

The Hobart Australian Interface Reference Site has been established at Saab’s Sovereign Combat Systems Collaboration Centre (SCSCC) to enable integration and testing of systems that will be installed on the upgraded destroyers.
The Australian Interface (AI) is a derivative of the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN’s) Australian Combat Management System (AusCMS), which is designed, developed and integrated in Australia by Saab, and deployed across the RAN’s surface fleet.
The AI integrates radars, electronic warfare systems and underwater sensors and effectors into the Aegis Combat Management System. Saab Australia Managing Director, Andy Keough CSC, said establishing the reference site was a major step towards the delivery of enhanced naval combat capability.
“The Hobart AI reference site enables system integration and testing ahead of installing this advanced combat system capability on the Hobart destroyers,” said Mr Keough. “In partnership with the Commonwealth, Saab has developed a formidable sovereign capability underpinned by a talented engineering workforce and worldleading facilities. This can serve Australian needs beyond just the naval domain including possible application for land forces thereby maximising the national benefits from the investment.”
The Australian Interface ensures RAN combat systems remain capable and effective throughout the platform’s service life – reducing Australia’s dependency on other nations and empowering the Commonwealth to introduce new capabilities as desired.
This offers significant advantages for the RAN by reducing development costs and delivery risks across the fleet while providing a common operator experience, which ultimately offers greater value for money for Australia.
Under the Hobart class upgrade program, Saab is also delivering its MultiFunction Consoles to operate the Australian Interface and is partnering with BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin through the Combat Systems IntegrationIntegrated Project Team.
