After months of pressure, the Labour leader announced he would step aside
Off Keir Starmer has resigned as the prime minister of Great Britain just under two years after taking the position.
On Monday morning Starmer gave an address outside Number 10 Downing Street after days of speculation over his next move.
"I will resign as leader of the Labour Party," he said.
He said he has asked the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable with leadership nominations opening on 9 July, and completed by the summer recess.
The announcement means a new prime minister is set to be in place before Parliament returns in September.

"The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election," Starmer said.
"I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.
Every decision I’ve taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour party."
He added: "I have spoken to his majesty the king this morning to inform him of my decision."
The prime minister's resignation has been triggered by the by-election victory of Andy Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor, in Makerfield last week.
Burnham is highly popular within the parliamentary Labour Party and is the frontrunner to be the next prime minister.
