Syria, several Arab states, and Turkey condemned the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, which killed and wounded hundreds of people and caused widespread destruction in Beirut and other areas.
On April 8, Israel targeted dozens of sites, including residential buildings in neighborhoods of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned the Israeli attack, saying it constituted a clear violation of international humanitarian law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
In a statement, the ministry stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire and full compliance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, in a way that ensures the protection of civilians and respect for state sovereignty.
It also called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities in confronting these violations, renewing its solidarity with Lebanon and its support for the Lebanese government’s efforts to extend its authority across all Lebanese territory and ensure that weapons remain exclusively in the hands of the state.
Qatar’s foreign ministry described the assault as a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the Lebanese Republic and called on the international community to compel the Israeli occupation authorities to stop their attacks on Lebanon.
For its part, Oman’s foreign ministry denounced the attack and said it amounted to war crimes and a blatant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and the principles of international law and the UN Charter. It also called on the international community to stop these violations and hold Israel fully responsible.
Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates also stressed the need to halt the attacks, saying they represent a breach of international humanitarian law, a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty, and a dangerous escalation that pushes the region toward further tension.
Egypt’s foreign ministry condemned the assault as well, describing it as a deliberate and systematic targeting of vital civilian facilities and infrastructure, and said it ran counter to the positive atmosphere that had prevailed in the region following the ceasefire announcement.
Kuwait’s foreign ministry, in turn, called on the international community and the UN Security Council to assume their responsibilities and take immediate and firm action to deter these attacks, while reaffirming its support for Lebanon to preserve its security, stability, and territorial integrity.
Turkey’s foreign ministry also condemned the Israeli airstrikes that targeted wide areas of Lebanon, warning of a worsening humanitarian situation and stressing that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government continues to undermine international efforts aimed at establishing peace and stability, despite the truce announced in the region.
Hundreds killed and wounded
On April 8, Israeli forces launched their most intense air assault on Lebanon since the Israeli army began its military operation against Lebanon’s Hezbollah on March 2.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that, in addition to several neighborhoods in Beirut, the Israeli strikes hit southern Lebanon, Hermel, and Zahle. The raids targeted villages and towns in the Tyre district, including Housh Sour, al-Mansouri, al-Qlayleh, al-Hinniyeh, al-Bazourieh, al-Burj al-Shamali, Deir Qanoun al-Nahr, Kounine, and al-Majadel, as well as Hermel district and farmland in Dhour al-Karak.
The unprecedented Israeli bombardment across Lebanon killed 254 people and wounded 1,165 others.
These developments came hours after the United States and Iran announced a two-week truce as a step toward ending the war, while Pakistan said the truce also included the Lebanese front.
A Pakistani mediator also announced that negotiations between the United States and Iran would begin on Friday, April 10.
