The remains of a US soldier who went missing during military exercises in Morocco have been recovered from the Atlantic Ocean, according to a statement released by the US military on Sunday.

1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., an Air Defense Artillery officer, was one of two US soldiers who fell off a cliff while on a recreational hike in Morocco during their off-duty time, according to a report from the Associated Press.

“A Moroccan military search team found the soldier in the water along the shoreline at approximately 8:55 a.m. local time, May 9, within roughly one mile of where both soldiers reportedly entered the ocean,” the US military's statement read.

The two soldiers were reported missing last week after participating in African Lion, an annual multinational military exercise held in Morocco.

Their disappearance led to a search and rescue operation involving over 600 personnel from the US, Morocco, and other military allies, and the operation reportedly involved the use of frigates, ships, helicopters, and drones, according to AP.

“Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, and all who knew and served alongside him. The 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command Family is grieving, and we will continue to support one another and 1st Lt. Key’s family as we honor his life and service.”

Lt. Key, commanding officer, Lt. Col. Chris Couch commented on Key’s character following news of his death, stating, “Kendrick embodied the highest standards of service as a selfless, inspirational leader whose unwavering dedication to his Soldiers and their development leaves an enduring legacy within our ranks.”

“The 5-4 ADAR Family mourns the loss of an exceptional teammate, and our heartfelt thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the Key Family,” he added.

Lt. Key was 27 years old at the time of his death.

US and Moroccan forces are currently continuing the large-scale effort to search for the remaining missing soldier in hopes of recovery.
