U.K. arrests four suspected of spying on Jewish sites for Iran

British police arrested four people on Friday as part of a counter-terrorism investigation into suspected Iran-related spying, according to U.K. authorities.

The investigation is focused on suspected surveillance of locations and individuals connected to Jewish communities in the London area.

As part of a pre-planned operation, police detained one Iranian national and three dual British-Iranian nationals. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is linked to Iran. All four are being questioned in relation to suspected national security offences, with investigations ongoing.

Iran vows wider attacks as leadership trio seeks Khamenei successor

The Iranian military has announced an escalation of its retaliatory attacks nearly a week after the outbreak of the war. State television reported on Friday, citing the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters – which takes operational command of Iran's armed forces during wartime – that "in the coming days, the enemy will face more intensive and wide-ranging strikes."

Iran's military leadership also claimed attacks with kamikaze drones on Ramat David air base and a radar station in Israel, as well as strikes on a U.S. base in Kuwait and in Erbil, Iraq.

Iran's temporary leadership council continues to grapple with the question of who will succeed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed during Israeli-U.S. strikes last Saturday. At its fourth meeting, President Masoud Pezeshkian, judiciary chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and cleric Alireza Arafi discussed convening an assembly to select a new supreme leader, according to a government statement issued Friday.

The trio has been running state affairs since Khamenei's death. The council was granted expanded powers on Thursday, including authority over matters of war and peace and the ability to appoint or dismiss military and police officials.

Under Iran's constitution, the Assembly of Experts – a body of 88 clerics – is responsible for selecting the next supreme leader. It remains unclear when the body will convene.

Israel's defense minister warned on Wednesday that the country would also target Khamenei's successor. One potential candidate is his second-oldest son, Mojtaba Khamenei.
