28 February 2026 President Trump announced that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was “dead… this is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their country”. Prime Minister Netanyahu remarked that “we eliminated the tyrant Khamenei. Along with him, we eliminated dozens of senior figures of the oppressive regime”. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) confirmed Khamenei’s death, with several other senior officials also killed, including the chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, defence minister, commander of the IRGC and defence council secretary Ali Shamkhani. The Islamic Republic subsequently formed an interim leadership council.
